How can today’s Technology help people and the environment?

 According to ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education), the goal of effective digital citizenship instruction is to “create thoughtful, empathetic digital citizens who can wrestle with the important ethical questions at the intersection of technology and humanity.”

ISTE resources help you bring digital citizenship to the classroom in meaningful ways

Digital citizenship is about much more than online safety — or a long list of don’ts. It’s also about the do’s that help create thoughtful, empathetic digital citizens who can wrestle with the important ethical questions at the intersection of technology and humanity.

Those do’s include:
  • Using technology to make your community better.
  • Engaging respectfully online with people who have different beliefs than you.
  • Using technology to make your voice heard by public leaders and to shape public policy.
  • Determining the validity of online sources of information.

This new lens focuses on empowering learners to be in community with others in online spaces and showing them that digital citizenship goes beyond conversations about personal responsibility. It’s about being active citizens who see possibilities instead of problems and opportunities instead of risks as they curate a positive and effective digital footprint.

And yet, we find the discussion about climate change and technology’s direct impact on the factors influencing it very much lacking. 

It feels incredibly disingenuous to blog about technology, digital citizenship, STEM and hope for a technology solution…without acknowledging and encouraging others to acknowledge the impact of technology and our consumption of technology on the environment.

Many of us are talking around it. ISTE standards encourage the empowered learner to engage with the global community, solve real-world problems, and even use technology to shape public policy We use technology to research global warming, to learn the effects of climate change, to do our science lessons, simulations, and even create 3D models. I found lots of promising information about green technology and sustainable schools.

But I didn’t see much current information about the “greening” of the actual devices we use and how we use them in and out of the classroom.

If you are using devices in the classroom, if students are using devices at home, if you are teaching in the 21st century, part of your digital citizenship speech needs to include discussions around e-waste and digital carbon footprints.

    Life with technology
    Technology can help the environment, with electric cars that do not use gasoline to run and use the energy of the sun with panels, technology can also help people to carry out their daily activities such as shopping or other activities, as we saw in the video that a technological device helped a person to go to the supermarket, helping him when getting off the bus, also how to withdraw money from the ATM and the device also carried the shopping list.
    Currently it has helped me to do my classes and homework.

  11. la tecnología nos puede ayudar a nosotros a incentivar el ahorro de energía o recursos, también ayudarnos a hacer cosas cotidianas como ir de compras, recordarnos eventos importantes etc...
    la tecnología ayuda a el medio ambiente recaudando energía;como la solar o eólica. sin necesidad de combustibles fósiles o también programar tecnologías para reproducir plantas.hay algunas a acciones que al ayudar a las personas automáticamente ayudan a el medio ambiente.todo esto importante para asegurar nuestro futuro y de los demás.

    El objetivo principal de las tecnologías es transformar el entorno humano para adaptarlo mejor a las necesidades y deseos del hombre. En este proceso, los recursos naturales y las personas se utilizan para proporcionar información, trabajo y mercado para las actividades tecnológicas.

    La tecnología puede ayudar a las personas con dificultades, en cosas complejas o en cosas básicas, por ejemplo, a guiarles si están perdido con GPS, esto puede ser de gran ayuda para personas ciegas. A personas que no tienen alguna parte de su cuerpo con prótesis muy avanzadas de alta tecnología que remplazan las partes del cuerpo perdidas.
    En cuanto al medio ambiente y la fauna la tecnología puede ayudar por ejemplo por medio de drones que identifican los caminos que utilizan los cazadores de animales en vía de extinción. También a los animales se les colocan chips que ayudan para que puedan ser detectados y hacerles seguimiento ayudando a su conservación.
